day onehundred sixteen 4.26.2010

A detail from a watercolor I did while in Breckenridge, Colorado a couple years back. It was a big ski/snowboard trip, but I broke my leg badly 3 weeks before we left, so I knit a lot and hobbled outside to make paintings like this one-

day onehundred fifteen 4.25.2010

Today was the March for Babies, and thanks to some of you, I raised $245 for the charity. My niece Annie was born 3 months early almost 2 years ago and spent the first few months of her life in a neonatal ICU. Here is a picture of her after the walk. Her brother Luke (in the other picture) can make her laugh harder than anything else.

day onehundred fourteen 4.24.2010

my dad used to say he knew it would be a good day if he saw a bulldog. sometimes he would call me to let me know he was having a "two bulldog day". today was beacon barks (a dog parade and festivities) and there were lots of bulldogs all day long.

day onehundred thirteen 4.23.2010

love fuzzy dandelions! one of my favorite signs of spring-

day onehundred twelve 4.22.2010

happy 40th earth day! new paltz has a solar powered racing car team and i got to see the car up close. it's not as sturdy looking in person as i expected, and if you look closely, you can see the guy's feet stick out of the bottom fred flintstone style.

day onehundred eleven 4.21.2010

the water taxi is to the left, in case you were looking for it.

day onehundred ten 4.20.2010

between grading and teaching today i spent some time with my friend jennifer in her backyard. she has a hammock there that allows you to lie back and stare up at the branches of a huge pine tree. i brought my camera (i always do now, especially if i'll be hanging out with jennifer; she's a photographer) and took a few photos of her backyard. when i downloaded them onto my computer i found a couple of pictures of me swinging on the hammock that i didn't realize she had taken.

day onehundred nine 4.19.2010

the very blue and pretty clouded sky above the desmond fish (aka newburgh-beacon) bridge. and yes, i realize i shouldn't be taking photos while driving.

zoe fagioli getting scritched on the head by nate

day onehundred seven 4.17.2010

it was a gloomy morning and murphy and i walked down to the river to take pictures of nate, matt and ray out kayaking (last week was snowboarding season, and now it's paddling season!). all of my pictures from that morning came out fine, but are all gloomy shades of gray except this one, so i'm posting this instead!

thought this was a funny way to sell wine-

day onehundred five 4.15.2010

here's a drawing i sent in for a show with habitat for artists- all the drawings had to be recycled, meaning they contained part of an old drawing, and had to be 6" by 6". they are all being sold for $25 to raise money for the project. it's oil pastel and ink on tracing paper-

day onehundred four 4.14.2010

it seems like lately i've been running around at full tilt from sunup to the wee hours of the middle of the night for the last few days, so when i came home to find nate had made a cool looking new dinner, i was so happy i busted out the camera. this is his take on bangers and mash, with a seared turkey sausage, local green beans and mash made w local potatoes and local milk, and an onion sauce. an appreciated oasis of yumminess and conversation in the middle of a busy week.

day onehundred and two 4.12.2010

the door to suny new paltz's digital fabrication lab. never sure if it's supposed to be a statement (question what is possible) or a query (what is possible?).

day onehundred and one 4.11.2010

went down to the city again today to attend the launch of my friend amy's book, the popularity papers (buy it!). as sarah and nate are demonstrating, the cover lends itself to a new version of photo game along the lines of i'm-holding-the-eiffel-tower-on-the-palm-of-my-hand, and the ever popular i'm-crushing-your-head. walked by one of the coolest buildings in the city, the flatiron building, on the way to the bookstore.

day one hundred! 4.10.2010

yay! it's day one hundred! unfortunately, i have to cheat a little bit with this post. i was on the train on my way in to nyc with tiffany to go fabric shopping at mood (as seen on project runway), and going up the hudson was one of the wooden tall ships (the half moon i think). quickly i whip out my camera and start clicking away. in between patting myself on the back for being so quick on the draw, i notice the camera is informing me that there is, in fact, no memory card in said camera. so no photos of the tall ship! instead i am posting a photo of the sky over the hudson on 4/11/2010, also taken from the train. i do have one photo of the end of a fabric roll on my phone; hopefully i will figure out how to post it here soon so i don't have to feel like a cheater, especially on day one hundred.

day ninetynine 4.9.2010

some spring blossoms in cold spring- the apple blossoms always remind me of the tree in the backyard of the house i grew up in on long island. my sister and i used to make garlands and try to wear them in our hair. my mom told me a story about being so cold one day in college at university of michigan that her breath froze the collar of her coat together, but she saw some forsythia while walking across campus and knew it meant the hope of spring was just around the bend.

day ninetyeight 4.8.2010

This piece of moss on a rock near my house reminded me of some sort of pincushion or a mini Dr. Seuss landscape. I noticed it a few days ago and was glad it was still like this today. This blog project has made me realize how quickly the things around us can change. Just because something looks a certain way when I see it does not mean it will look anything like that the next day or even in a few hours. the one constant is change, eh?

day ninetyseven 4.7.2010

took this photo while we waited and waited for nate's free birthday dinner. it's not often that we get to sit outside for dinner for his birthday in early april; it's usually not nearly warm enough for those kind of shenanigans

day ninetysix 4.6.2010

the spring plants are popping up everywhere. lots of forsythia, daffodils, and tulips around. i love the squiggly curly lines of these spring onions that show up this time of year-

day ninetyfive 4.5.2010

today is the home opener for the Mets! yay baseball season! unfortunately for me, i have to teach today, so instead of having some great photo taken at the game, it's a photo of the dog hanging out of the car in front of me on my way to my class.

day ninetyfour 4.4.2010

easter with the fam- nate and i woke up super early to drive down to li and have breakfast with elly, luke, annie, steve and mom before church. after some bagels and lox, we headed out to god's house as my nephew calls it. at one point, annie was rolling on her back in the back of the church giggling and saying "happy!". thinking about how she was born so small and so early (29 weeks, 2lbs 9oz) and where she is now blows my mind sometimes. here she is with her red curly hair at 22 months old. after church, nate, mom and i spent the afternoon with our dogs at the farm watching them chase each other around the pond, then had dinner outside, poulet amelie with brussel sprouts. also, in case you have ever wondered what it looks like when a 3 legged dog rolls on his back, wonder no more. here's a photo!

day ninetythree 4.3.2010

nate talked me into going snowboarding at bellayre today with a bunch of his ski patrol friends from thunder ridge. (bribing me with a new wonder woman tshirt helped) the snow was actually still there, and it was pushing 80 degrees out. it was one of the most fun days on the slopes i've ever had; and i almost didn't go! at the end of the day i was taken down a double black diamond mogul run and didn't freak out. nate and his friends found a stream in the middle of one of the trails and snowboarded/skiied the length of it, kindof surfing or gliding on the surface of the water with spray everywhere. videos of the event can be found on facebook (of course!)

day ninetytwo 4.2.2010

i've been trying to take advantage of all the things in nyc i like to do but sometimes forget about, so today i came in on the first off peak train, stopped in on the waldorf-astoria to use the bathroom (very fancy; i took some photos and a paper hand towel with the hotel's crest on it) went to the Abramovic exhibition at MoMA (utterly fantastic; still finding the words for the feelings i felt), picked up nate near his job and went to chinatown for cheap sunglasses, (we both got fake ray bans, mine are white and black and his are primary blue) stopped by Kristi's opening, then went back to a little mexican place nate and i found earlier with sarah for margaritas in fountain soda glasses. if you look closely at the reflection in the restaurant window you can see sarah under the pink neon of lupe's.

day ninetyone 4.1.2010

during my break between classes i poked around out behind one of the theaters on campus. in addition to a random row of birdhouses and a chalkboard mounted to a wall, i found this. i think it looks like some sort of mid 20th century painting, and i think it would be fun to translate it into some sort of jewelry form.

day ninety 3.31.2010

one of my favorite things to do at other people's houses is to look at their books. here is a random section of one of my shelves. the white one in the center is a book on droog design, and a couple of them are borrowed. if you see one of yours, i promise i will return it once i read it soon!

day eightynine 3.30.2010

as i was walking up the path to the building i teach in at DCC, i looked down and noticed the entire thing was covered in earthworm carnage. it's been raining nonstop for days this week, so i guess that's what drew them all out on the pavement. RIP Slimey and friends-
